J.D. has been, in one way or another, a marketing communicator all his life. A chronic doodler since early childhood, he is a wellspring of pictures and words. “I could always draw and put a caption to the drawing,” he explains, “I have the scribbles and doodles to prove it. My mother dated and saved everything.” When it came time to name his company, J.D. opted to brand via the owl, revered for its historical significance, extraordinary physical attributes, and instincts. Owlish Communications, formed in 1984, was born out of J.D.’s long-time fascination for owls. “The owl is a stealth creature,” says J.D. “She lays back until ready to strike, then does so with impact and purpose. That’s how I view my writing.”
J.D. is a prominent business cartoonist whose artwork has been showcased across a wide variety of media. He has contributed business cartoons to the Chicago Cubs and other professional sports publications. His business comics have also been featured in trade journals of the professional selling, financial services, health care, and leisure pursuit industries. He is perhaps best known as the creator of Will Banter™, an aspiring spokesperson and cartoon icon for Social Media, and The Handshake Club™, a universe of cartoon businesspeople who stand at the ready for personal and corporate branding, multi-media promotional campaigns, digital animation, and educational applications.
J.D. is also a dedicated student of neuroscience and understands the ways in which the brain processes and interprets written content and visual cues. He draws upon his background in industrial and organizational psychology to bring immeasurable value to individuals and companies wishing to leverage Social Media. In 2006, J.D. turned his undivided attention to LinkedIn. “I loved it right away,” he says, “I’d be on it constantly, tweaking my LinkedIn profile daily, researching people and companies, clicking on links, exploring the groups, and posting comments in the discussions.” For J.D., LinkedIn gave impetus to develop a unique personal branding philosophy and content management system for his clients. J.D. is a product of Chicago’s North Shore. He grew up in Wilmette, Illinois and attended New Trier West High School in Northfield, Illinois. He received a B.A. in English from the University of Cincinnati’s McMicken College of Arts & Sciences. He earned an M.S. in Industrial Psychology from Illinois Institute of Technology (where he successfully defended a thesis on humor in advertising as a determinant of buying behavior), and an M.B.A. with Honors in Marketing from the Institute’s Stuart School of Business. |
